The Maryville College Lady Scots basketball team dropped their season opener against Centre College on Tuesday evening by the score of 80-60 in Danville, Kentucky.
The Colonels jumped out to a ten point advantage and held the lead into the half as Centre deposited 11-of-13 free-throws. Each team connected around 49% from the field and the battle went to the intermission with a 42-32 Lady Colonel lead.
Centre forced 18 game MC turnovers and held the Scots to 28% shooting, connecting on only eight shots in the second half. Maryville finished the game hitting only 37% of their team shots from the floor.
MC sophomore Lauren Burnett paced the Scots in scoring with 11 points. Burnett was 4-for-7 from the field. Point guard Lailah Farmer added 10 points on 3-of-8 shooting. Maryville's post of Tayler Smith and Whitney Mitchell combined for 8 points and 9 rebounds. Tara Hayboer and Smith led the visitors with seven rebounds each.
Centre (1-0) was led by Maggie Prewitt. Prewitt hit 7-of-16 shots and 9-of-12 free-throws for a game-high 24 points.
Maryville (0-1) will return to MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium for their home opener on Saturday when they host Oglethorpe University. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 pm on Randy Lambert Court.
