GREENSBORO, N.C. – Senior Danielle Duncan netted all 12 of her points in the second half of host Greensboro College's 59-49 basketball win over crosstown-rival Guilford College Wednesday.
Duncan also became Greensboro's career scoring leader as the Pride (1-0) erased an eight-point second-half deficit to win both teams' season opener. Chevena Pickard scored 10 of her team-high 15 points in the second half for Greensboro, which is ranked as high as sixth in one national preseason poll.
Greensboro outscored Guilford, 16-5, in the final 4:58 and made all eight free throws in the final two minutes.
Neither team shot better than 30 percent from the floor, but it was Greensboro's six-for-18 free-throw shooting in the first half that contributed to a 29-24 halftime deficit. Guilford's Jazlyn Gibbs scored 10 of her game-high 16 points in the first half, including two three-pointers.
With thunder and lightning outside, the Pride came to life in the second half. After two Gabby Oglesby free throws opened a 33-23 Guilford lead, Duncan finally got on the scoreboard early in the half. Her traditional 3-point play tied the game at 39-39, marked her first field goal of the game and gave her the school's career scoring record. Bianca Richburg added another traditional three-point play with 7:19 left in the game, which gave Greensboro its first lead since the first half.
Gibbs made her third three-pointer of the game with just under five minutes left in regulation, to restore a 44-43 Quakers' lead, but Greensboro's Adrienne Terrell and Hannah Holm answered with consecutive threes. After a Guilford turnover, Duncan scored, capping a decisive 8-0 Greensboro run, and opening an insurmountable 51-44 lead.
Jena Cabe made two three-pointers on the way to nine points for Greensboro. Terrell finished with seven points, nine boards and a game-high seven assists.
Guilford's Oglesby finished with eight points and five rebounds in 24 minutes. Teammate Jaclyn Nucci scored four points grabbed a team-high eight rebounds and had two blocks.
The Quakers return to action Friday (11/18) against Concordia College in the Jackie Ammons Tournament at Peace College.
