Cortland Wins Season Opener vs. Elmira, 79-49

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Molly Byrne (Syracuse/Bishop Ludden) scored 13 points and senior Brittany Cohen (Fayetteville/Jamesville-DeWitt) finished with 11 points and 11 assists as Cortland opened the season with a 79-49 victory over visiting Elmira College.

Byrne hit 3-of-5 three-pointers and Cohen made 3-of-7 treys. Freshman Brittany Rando (Owego/Owego Free Academy) shot 3-for-3, all from three-point range in the first half, in her collegiate debut. She finished with 10 points, three assists and four steals.

Also for the Red Dragons, freshman Lindsey Minor (Wheatley Heights/St. John the Baptist) totaled nine points, five steals and four assists, freshman Brooke DeMarco (Grand Island) scored nine points on 4-of-6 shooting and senior Megan Maycumber (Jamesville/Jamesville-DeWitt) registered six points and a game-high eight rebounds.

Cortland finished 12-of-24 from three-point range despite the fact that the women's three-point line has been moved back to the men's distance of 20' 9" in all three NCAA divisions this season.

Elmira (0-1) was led by Jessica Zoltowski's (Erie, PA/Harbor Creek) 17 points. She made 3-of-6 three-pointers. Darcy James (Castile/Letchworth Central) added 13 points.

The Soaring Eagles were within 18-14 with 10:46 left in the first half after a Zoltowski jumper, but Cortland scored 16 of the next 18 points to take a 34-16 lead with 2:58 remaining. Rando made two of her three-pointers during that run.

Cortland led 42-20 at halftime and quickly pushed its advantage to 33 points at 57-24 less than six minutes into the second half.

Cortland will play at the Dickinson College Days Inn Tip-Off Tournament in Carlisle, Pa., on Saturday and Sunday. The Red Dragons face Rowan (N.J.) in the opening round Saturday at 8 p.m.
