The UW-Whitewater women's basketball team started an eighteen point run over a five minute span to start the second half on the way to a 82-60 win over Carroll University Tuesday night in Kachel Gym of Williams Center in Whitewater.
Whitewater opened the game with an 8-0 run and built up a thirteen point lead three times, the latest 19-6 with11:04 in the first half. Over the next six minutes the Pioneers responded, cutting the lead to 23-21 with 4:27 left. UW-W went into the locker room with a 37-29 lead.
Whitewater shot 47% in the first half, Carroll 32%, and the Warhawks had a 21-13 rebounding advantage.
For all practical purposes the game was decided over the next four and a half minutes, as UW-W out-scored Carroll 18-0 to build a 56-29 bulge. The Warhawks eventually built a 29 point cushion, 72-43 with 6:39 left in the game. The closest Carroll would come the rest of the way was 80-60 with 0:53 on the clock.
Whitewater shot 45% for the game and hit 19-25 from the line. Carroll shot 32%, making 22-28 free throws in a game that lasted more than two hours.
Sophomore guard Mary Merg led UW-W with 17 points, including 5-5 from the line. Junior center Cortney Kumerow added 16 points and a game high eight rebounds. Senior guards Jamie Swanson and Emily Bestor led the Warhawks with four assists apiece.
Carroll was led by junior forward Janelle Groer's 11 points and ten from sophomore guard Emily DeNoyer. Groer also had a game high six assists, and topped the Pioneers with four rebounds.
UW-W, 1-0, will play in the Millikin University Tournament November 19-20. Whitewater will face Whitworth College at 3:00 on the 19th, and host Millikin at 3:00 on the 20th. The next home for Whitewater will be November 23, with Illinois Wesleyan University visiting for a 6:00 tipoff.
