NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- It didn't take long. The 5-8 senior guard
from Chesapeake, Va., came into the 2010-11 season opener with
1,999 points and as quickly as the season began, so too did the
anticipation for Chelsie Schweers to
reach the monumental 2,000-point plateau. Less than a minute into
the game, Schweers nailed a trademark 3-pointer to put her over the
mark, making her just the second women's player and the third men's
or women's CNU player ever to score 2,000.
The fourth-ranked Captains (1-0) rushed out to an early 12-point
lead, and never trailed after Schweers' first trey of the night as
they earned a season-opening victory over NCAA Division II Virginia
Union (0-3), 68-63.
Schweers went 4-for-4 in the opening stanza, scoring 12 points in
10 minutes of action. Junior guard Kimmy
Hopkins added eight points to help CNU to a
one-point halftime lead, 31-30. Despite the early lead by CNU, the
Panthers came storming back before the break, paced by Kara Scott
with 12 points and three boards in the first.
In the second half, it was the same story, as CNU pulled out to
another double-digit lead in the first ten minutes of the half, but
Virginia Union came roaring back again. Scott poured in another 16
points as she took over the Panthers offense, and pulled her team
back within three with less than two and half minutes
remaining.
This time, though it was a different Captains senior that stepped
up in a big way for CNU. Barbara Davis,
who was held to just two points and one rebound in the first 20
minutes, came out firing in the second and finished with a
double-double. Davis had a team-high 17 points and a game-high 11
boards, and was the go-to player in several tight moments, as
Virginia Union cut the lead all the way back to three.
CNU held off the run to get the victory, led by Davis with the
double-double. Schweers and Hopkins each finished in double figures
with 15 and 13 points respectively. Senior Jessica
Moore also had eight points and seven boards for the
Captains.
VUU was led by Scott, with 28 points and five rebounds, while
adding five steals. Gabrielle Easley and Alura Jones each added
nine for the Panthers.
The Captains will now hit the road for a game this weekend, as
they travel to Washington & Lee for a 4:00 pm tilt on Saturday,
November 20.
