Nationally Ranked Green Knights Overcome Titans

St. Norbert College posted a 10-2 scoring run to finish off the UW-Oshkosh women's basketball team, 50-42, on Saturday (Nov. 20) in De Pere. The game was the championship contest of the Baylake Bank Tip-Off Tournament.

The score was tied at 37, 38 and 40 during the final 6:15. After a Krista Hawkinson lay-up took the lead, the Green Knights (2-0) got four points from Stefanie Bunday. Jamie Kuhl, who topped all players with 13 points, scored a bucket to make it 48-42 with 27 seconds remaining.

Each time a team appeared to be pulling away, the other would respond and erase its deficit. Both squads made 3-of-8 three-pointers in the contest while pulling down 14 offensive rebounds. The shooting was also close, with St. Norbert College hitting 37 percent (19-51) and the Titans 35 percent (16-46).
St. Norbert College entered the game ranked 21st in the NCAA Division III by D3hoops.com.

UW-Oshkosh (3-1) rattled off seven consecutive points to take an early 7-2 lead. Following lay-ups from Laura Ebbens (Sr. • Appleton) and Shelby Churchill (Sr. • Sheboygan), a three-pointer by Michelle Boeder (Sr. • Oshkosh) put the Titans ahead by five. The Green Knights bounced back with Krista Hawkinson's triple and tied the contest at 9 with 10:22 on the clock.

Leading 14-11 with 7:29 to play in the opening half, the Titans registered just one basket. St. Norbert College took advantage with a 10-2 run before intermission. The Green Knights went in front on Kuhl's hoop at the 4:09 mark. Kuhl added another lay-up and free throw to give her team a 21-16 cushion at the break.

UW-Oshkosh bolted out of the locker room with a 12-1 scoring streak. Boeder sandwiched a deep jump shot in between a triple, a lay-up and two free throws by Megan Wenig (So. • Oshkosh). The Titans maintained a 28-22 lead with 15:10 left.

Both teams racked up points at the charity stripe as UW-Oshkosh's margin was 36-30 with 9:49 to go. Maggie Tansey drilled a three-point shot to slice the deficit in half before Bunday connected on a jumper, tying it at 37 with less than seven minutes on the clock.

St. Norbert College, which made 9-of-15 free throws (60 percent), obtained 10 points, six rebounds and four steals from Erin Baganz. Bunday tacked on nine points, as Kuhl and Brigette Baudhuin each snatched eight boards.

No Titan broke double figures, with Boeder and Churchill each marking nine points. Churchill totaled eight rebounds, followed by Becca Diedrich (Fr. • Two Rivers) with six. UW-Oshkosh, which committed 18 turnovers to the Green Knights' 15, also received eight points from Wenig. The Titans converted 39 percent (7-18) of their foul shots.

UW-Oshkosh will face Ripon College in Kolf Sports Center on Tuesday (Nov. 23).
