NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Christopher Newport University senior Chelsie Schweers has added yet another milestone to her illustrious career, as she becomes the only women's basketball player in the history of the NCAA to hit 400 three-pointers in her career. Just nine seconds into an 81-62 victory over Johns Hopkins (22-6), Schweers knocked down her 398th career trey, passing Melissa Beyruti (Kean) and taking sole possession of the top spot all-time.
The Chesapeake native finished the game with a CNU NCAA Tournament record 37 points, with five made three-pointers. She now holds the NCAA record for women's basketball at all NCAA levels, with 402 made three-pointers.
The win extended Christopher Newport's home winning streak to 39 straight games, the third longest active streak in Division III. CNU will advance to the Sweet 16 for the second straight year and will play the winner of the Kean University and Western Connecticut State Second Round game.
The Captains led by as many as 12 in the first half, but Hopkins stormed back to cut the lead to four at halftime, 37-33. Three different Blue Jays scored eight points in the half, including eight points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal from Centennial Conference Player of the Year Lyndsay Burton.
CNU was led in the first by Schweers' 14 points, two rebounds and two assists. Barbara Davis scored eight and Lauren Gural had seven in the first half.
Hopkins hung around in the second half, but never led, and CNU eventually extended the lead to double digits for good at the 7:03 mark on a Kimmy Hopkins jumper. The Captains stayed hot from the field and finished off the wire-to-wire victory with a 19-point margin of victory.
