Women’s Basketball Roars Past Wheelock College, 64-40

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Elms College freshman forward Erika Murphy (Torrington, Conn.) netted a team-high 12 points and hauled in a game-best 12 rebounds to help pace the Blazers to a 64-40 victory over Wheelock College in Saturday afternoon's New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women's basketball game.

With the win, Elms concludes its regular season 9-16 overall, 7-8 in NECC action, while Wheelock concludes its regular season 5-18 overall, 4-11 in conference play.

Leading 37-20 at halftime, Elms extended its lead to 22 on the strength of a trey each from freshman guards Emily Boucher (Ashburnham, Mass.) and Ellen Donohue (Southington, Conn.) to set the score at 47-25 with 13:03 remaining in the game.

A layup by Elms' freshman forward Nicolette Martin (Colchester, Conn.) at the 8:30 mark gave the Blazers their largest lead of the game (23 points) and set the score to 54-31 until freshman guard Marisabel Santiago (Springfield, Mass.) found freshman guard Erin Broughton (Essex Junction, Vt.) underneath for the final basket of the contest with 26 seconds to play to give Elms a convincing 64-40 win.

Elms, which shot 53.6-percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes, used 11 points from sophomore guard Jen Normandie (Westford, Mass.) to sprint out to a 17-point lead at halftime.

Normandie finished with 12 points, while Donohue, Martin and junior guard Katie Condon (Sandy Hook, Conn.) contributed eight points apiece to seal the victory.

Murphy added six assists, while Donohue dished out five. Condon also grabbed seven boards in the winning effort.

Wheelock was led by Joy Holliday (Milford, Mass.) who netted a game-best 13 points, while Keneshia Milton (Boston, Mass.) hauled in a team-best nine boards.

Maya Spratling (Dorchester, Mass.) added eight rebounds, while Kayla Drescher (Wallingford, Conn.) contributed eight points and three blocked shots in the losing effort.
