Wheelock women cap two-game home-and-home series with Elms

CHICOPEE, MA - The Wheelock College women's basketball team completed its 2010-11 season on Saturday by finishing a two-game home-and-home series against Elms College with a 64-40 loss on Saturday during New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action in Picknelly Arena. The Wildcats, who downed the Blazers by a 68-60 count on Thursday, fell to 5-18 overall and 4-11 in the league, while the hosts moved to 9-16 and 7-8.

Senior Joy Holliday (Milford, MA/Milford) completed her career with a 13-point outing, going 3-for-5 from three-point range and dishing out three assists, while junior Kayla Drescher (Wallingford, CT/Mark T. Sheehan) neared a double-double behind eight points, seven rebounds and a trio of blocks. Sophomore Keneisha Milton (Boston, MA/Wayland) picked up three steals and snagged nine boards, becoming the program's career leader with 498. Junior Maya Spratling (Dorchester, MA/Cathedral) pulled down eight caroms.

Junior Erika Murphy (Torrington, CT/Torrington) led Elms with 12 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals, and sophomore Jen Normandie (Westford, MA/Westford Academy) notched 12 points and five steals off the bench. Four players collected eight points apiece, including junior Katie Condon (Sandy Hook, CT/Newtown), who totaled seven boards, and freshman Ellen Donohue (Southington, CT/Southington), who added five assists and three steals.

Milton dropped in a lay-up 3:18 into the game to draw Wheelock within 3-2 before the Blazers scored the next eight points. Drescher and Milton notched buckets during a 33-second span as the Wildcats crept to 12-6 by 13:50 of the opening half before the hosts pushed their lead out to 16-6. Wheelock responded with an 8-2 run, as senior Sharrell Brown (Brooklyn, NY/Progress) canned a three before hitting a lay-up, and Holliday drilled a triple of her own to create an 18-14 margin by 11:11.

However, Elms scored the next 14 points, with the run ending prior to Drescher's three-pointer at the 5:27 mark. Senior Caitlin Kerr (Attleboro, MA/Bishop Feehan) knocked down a trey for the Lyons at 2:37 for the final scoring of the period, as the Blazers took at 37-20 lead into the locker room.

The visitors netted the first five points of the second half, finishing off an 8-0 spurt when Holliday hit another three at 17:13 to make it 37-25, but Elms scored the next 10 points and never again led by fewer than 18 points.
