HARRISONBURG, Va. – Danielle Rittenhouse scored a game-high 22 points and Kala Yoders added 21 in Eastern Mennonite University's 79-74 overtime basketball win over visiting Guilford College Saturday.
The Royals (15-10, 13-7 ODAC) overcame a seven-point deficit with 3:49 left in regulation and tied the game on a Yoders basket with 54 seconds left. Both teams missed shots in the final seconds, which forced extra time.
Two Gabby Oglesby free throws gave the Quakers (14-11, 10-10 ODAC) the early overtime edge, but the Royals scored the game's next eight points, six from the free-throw line. Guilford's Logan Terry made two late baskets and pulled the Quakers to within 77-74 with nine seconds left in overtime, but the Quakers fouled Yoders, who iced Eastern Mennonite's third straight win with two free throws.
Eastern Mennonite enjoyed a sizable edge at the free-throw line where it converted 29-of-39 shots. By contrast, Guilford shot 10-of-16 from the line. Rittenhouse, who added seven rebounds, shot eight-of-nine from the stripe. Yoders grabbed a team-high eight boards and made nine-of-12 free throws. Teammate Bianca Ygarza chipped in 11 points and four rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.
Guilford put six students in double-figure scoring and was led by Terry's career-high 14 points. Oglesby finished with 13 points, a game- and career-high 16 rebounds, three blocks and a steal. Guilford's Jazlyn Gibbs added 13 points and six rebounds.
The win clinched the fifth seed for Eastern Mennonite in next week's ODAC Tournament in Salem, Va. The Royals open Thursday versus fourth-seeded Washington and Lee University in the Salem Civic Center at 3:00 p.m. Guilford is seeded seventh in the tourney and meets number-two Bridgewater College Thursday at 6:00 p.m.
