BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England women's basketball team placed six players in double figures to wrap up the regular season with an 82-41 win over Nichols College in a The Commonwealth Coast Conference game played Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.
The Nor'easters (19-6, 12-1 TCCC) have earned the second seed for the TCCC Championship and will play host to Western New England College on Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. Complete championship pairings are scheduled for release this evening. The Bison conclude their season at 11-13 overall, 5-8 in conference play.
UNE junior Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) led all scorers with 15 points, including an 8-for-9 showing at the free throw line. Senior Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) had 14 points and junior Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) added 12. Senior Chelsey Meszaros (North Clarendon, Vt.) and sophomores Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) and Liz LeBlanc (Jay, Maine) tossed in 10 points apiece. Meszaros grabbed a team-best six rebounds
For Nichols, senior Ashley Robidoux (Milford, Mass.) and Jessica Nelson (North Providence, R.I.) each tallied 12 points. Robidoux hit four shots from beyond the arc, while Nelson had seven boards and two steals.
Trailing 8-7 early on, the Nor'easters utilized a 15-2 run to establish a 22-10 lead at the 11:03 mark. Suggs scored six points during the spurt, which culminated with a fastbreak layup by junior Kari Pelletier (South Paris, Maine).
The two teams went back-and-forth over the next six minutes before UNE closed the half on a 13-2 run to take a 49-24 lead into intermission. Suggs and Paradis scored 10 points apiece in the frame for the Nor'easters, who connected on half (18 of 36) of their field goal attempts.
UNE cruised in the second half despite cooling off from the floor (35.7 percent).
For the game, Big Blue held a 45-30 rebounding advantage while limiting Nichols to 28.8 percent (15 of 52) accuracy from the floor and forcing 20 turnovers.
