MILWAUKEE -- Marian University's Alexis Becker made one-of-two free throws with 7 seconds remaining in double overtime to give the visiting Sabres a 72-71 lead and Alverno College's Gabby Allen (Milwaukee/Bay View) missed a jumper just before time expired to end the Inferno's postseason hopes.

The Sabres (14-10, 8-10 Northern Athletics Conference) advance to the 2011 NAC Tournament via tiebreaker over the Inferno (11-13, 8-10). The teams split the season series, but Marian's victory over Concordia Wisconsin -- who Alverno went 0-2 against -- is the tiebreaker that gives the Sabres the nod to the postseason.

Alverno wasn't able to get a victory on Senior Night, in which it honored seniors Allen and Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.).

"[The loss] hurts a lot," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "And those two seniors have been unbelievable, and I just wanted to say thanks to those two, they meant a lot.

"You know we've put the ball in [Allen's and McComb's] hands so many times in these big moments and they've made big shots for us. Tonight I think tonight Gabby had three or four looks, but a couple times she couldn't get the shot she wanted. Marin played great defense at the end."

With 50 seconds left in regulation, Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) made one-of-two free throws to give Alverno a 55-54 lead, but Marian's Dani Huray was fouled and make one-of-two herself to tie the game with 11 seconds left on the clock. Alverno was unable to get a shot off before time expired, as the game was sent into overtime.

The Inferno scored on the opening possession of the first overtime and led most of the period until Marian took the lead, 64-63, on a pair of free throws with 52 seconds remaining. Kontowski came up with an offensive rebound on the Inferno's next possession and was promptly fouled, and sunk one-of-two free throws to tie the game yet again. Neither team would score on their final possession of the first overtime, which sent the game to a second extra period.

In the final segment, the lead changed seven times, before Becker would make the go-ahead free throw.

Kontowski led the Inferno with 17 points on 6-of11 shooting, while Allen and Alyssa Jensen (Cudahy, Wis.) added 16. Allen was a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe, but struggled from the floor (4-of-16). Jensen, who had a game-high three blocks, was 4-of-7 on 3-point attempts.

McComb, who fouled out of the game in the second overtime, had a team-high 10 rebounds and a game-high five steals.

Marian's Elizabeth Zutz led all scorers with 28 points on 11-of-25 shooting and also snagged a game-high 12 rebounds.

Alverno plays in its final game this Saturday, facing host Concordia Chicago in a NAC Challenge game at 2 p.m.
