Women's Hoops Secures NEWMAC First Round Bye With Win at MIT

Cambridge, MA --- Lauren Hannmann (East Greenbush, NY) led all players with 18 points to help WPI post a 56-32 NEWMAC road victory at MIT on Wednesday evening.  The win was the third straight for the Engineers (17-6, 13-4 NEWMAC), who clinched second place in the 10-team league and in the process earned a first round bye in the NEWMAC Tournament.

After trading baskets to start the contest, back-to-back layups from Hannmann sparked a 20-4 run which resulted in a 22-8 advantage with 5:17 remaining in the frame. MIT registered seven unanswered points to cut its deficit in half, but a basket by Cindy Chelius (Northfield, NJ) raised WPI's margin to 24-15 at halftime. 

MIT narrowed the gap to six (25-19) early in the second stanza, but this was as close as it would get as a pair of Callie King (Londonderry, NH) three-pointers keyed a 10-4 spurt which returned WPI's lead to double-digits at the 14:16 mark. The visitors maintained their offensive rhythm during the remainder of the game with their largest lead coming at the final buzzer. 

Rachel Hunt (Arlington Heights, IL) paced MIT (8-15, 4-13 NEWMAC) with 12 points while grabbing six rebounds.Tamara Pena (Aliso Viejo, CA) tallied six points, three rebounds, two assists, and two steals while Anna Merrifield (Honolulu, HI) contributed six points and six rebounds for MIT. Stephanie Cooke (Lanoka Harbor, NJ) hauled in a team-high seven boards to go along with two steals while Lauren Sascha Burton (Seattle, WA) notched a trio of assists and steals.

Siena Mamayek (Melrose, MA) and Chelius both posted eight points coming off of the WPI bench. Melissa Kuhn (Stoughton, MA) compiled eight rebounds, five assists, four steals, and two blocks as Elle Fontaine registered six points, five boards, and two steals.

WPI is back in action on Saturday traveling to Wheaton for 3pm contest.  The Engineers will begin play in the six-team NEWMAC Tournament a week from Saturday (February 26th) playing an oppentent to be determinted at Babson at 3pm. MIT entertains Smith at 1pm.
