Shorewomen Slip Past Devils 52-51

(Chestertown, Md.)- The Dickinson College women's basketball team suffered a heartbreaker on the road at Washington on Thursday, falling 51-50 in Centennial Conference action. The Shorewomen erased a seven point halftime deficit and secured the win on an Erin Fitzgerald free throw with 34 seconds remaining in the game.

 

The game was close throughout the first half before the Devils went on a 7-0 run to end the period with a 28-21 lead. The Devils struck first after the break and held a 34-26 advantage at the 15:40 mark. Washington outscored the Devils 8-4 to pull within a field-goal with 12:27 to play, 36-34.

 

The Shorewomen took a 46-44 lead on a three-pointer from Meghan Tait at the 5:58 mark. Tait hit another triple with 3:57 remaining to put Washington up 49-45. Fitzgerald answered an Alesha Sisco (Effort, Pa./Blair Academy) jumper but then fouled to put Sisco on the line with the Devils trailing 51-47.

 

Sisco hit both free throws and the Devils forced Washington to miss with 1:32 remaining in the game. Junior Taylor Miller (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) tied the game with a lay-up at the 1:02 mark, 51-51.

 

Fitzgerald drew a foul with 34 seconds remaining and converted one of two free throws to give Washington a 52-51 lead. Following a Dickinson miss, the Devils put Latisha Pledger on the line with eight seconds to play. Pledger missed the front end of the one-and-one, but the Devils were unable to answer in the final seconds, falling to 6-7 overall and 4-5 in the Centennial Conference.

 

Sisco scored a game-high 16 points and recorded eight rebounds to lead the Devils. Carole Dempsey (Potomac, Md./Winston Churchill) added 14 points, six rebounds, two blocked shots and a pair of assists.

 

Miller tallied five points, three assists, three steals and a pair of blocks while senior Ashley Kunkle (Perkasie, Pa./Pennridge) chipped in with five points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. Sophomore Lindsay Finnerty (Tenafly, N.J./Tenafly) added six points, four rebounds, one assist and one steal.

 

Tait finished with 14 points, five rebounds and five assists to lead Washington (5-8, 3-5 CC).

 

The Red Devils (6-7, 4-5) travel to Swarthmore College for a 2:00 tip-off on Saturday.
