Junior Kelley Paradis became the 19th player in UNE history to score 1,000 career points

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- University of New England junior guard Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) scored 11 of her game-high 14 points after halftime to surpass the 1,000-point plateau, as the Nor'easters pulled away for a 67-35 The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball win over Gordon College on Wednesday evening at the Campus Center.

With their ninth consecutive victory, the Nor'easters improve to 18-6 overall and 11-1 in conference play. Gordon falls to 2-22, 1-11 in TCCC contests.

Paradis became the 19th UNE women's basketball player to score 1,000 or more career points when she drilled a three-pointer with 2:13 remaining. She reached the milestone a game after teammate Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) pulled off the feat Saturday at Colby-Sawyer College. Paradis added six rebounds, three steals and three blocks.

Junior forward Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) scored 12 points and handed out five assists for the Nor'easters. Sophomore Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) came off the bench to score 13 points and haul in seven rebounds, while junior point guard Kari Pelletier (South Paris, Maine) chipped in 10 points and three steals.

For the Fighting Scots, senior guard Sara Schwanke (Duxbury, Mass.) and first-year guard Clancey Adams (West Simsbury, Conn.) each scored nine points. Schwanke registered five assists and four steals. Junior guard Catey Marshall (St. Johnsbury, Vt.) was credited with a game-best 12 rebounds.

Leading by two (19-17) with 5:02 left in the opening half, the Nor'easters closed with a 10-2 run to lead 29-19 at intermission. Russell scored five points during the spurt.

Big Blue tallied 24 of the first 27 points over the opening 9:39 of the final frame to burst out to a commanding 53-22 cushion.

Both teams struggled shooting the basketball. UNE connected on 32.8 percent (21 of 64) of its field goal attempts while Gordon made 12 of 41 (29.3 percent) of its tries. The Nor'easters held a 45-35 rebounding advantage and forced 31 Fighting Scot turnovers.

The regular season concludes Saturday for each squad. UNE hosts Nichols College at 1 p.m. and Gordon heads to Salve Regina University for a 1 p.m. tilt.
