Over the Lightning's recent five game winning streak the team had been nothing short of dominant, beating its opponents by an average of nearly 31 points.
On Sunday afternoon, however, the Lightning got a taste of what its City University of New York Athletic Conference opponents had been feeling, as Division III powerhouse Mount Saint Mary College turned the tables in crushing Lehman 79-21.
Ranked just outside of the top 25 in the latest USA Today/ESPN Division III poll, the Knights, now 21-2 overall, lived up to their billing as they dominated in just about every facet of the game.
Lehman was held to just 16 percent shooting, outrebounded 59-27, and lost in an area of the game – the turnover battle – that it is usually so good in with the Knights only committing 13 miscues to the Lightning's 23. The Knights also did a good job keeping the Lightning's talented trio of Louvinia Hayes, Amanda De La Cruz and Jaleesa Gordon in check, though De La Cruz (9 minutes) and Hayes (16 minutes) saw limited action.
The Lightning did manage to hang tough for the initial part of the first half, trailing 8-6 with 14:07 remaining. But the Knights quickly kicked things into gear using a 13-0 run to open up a 21-6 lead and start themselves on the way to what ended up a 42-13 game at halftime.
Junior Jen Mocanu (14 points) led a balanced scoring attack for the Knights that had five players finish in double figures. Joining her were Amanda Horvers (13 points), Jess Tice (12 points), Katie Hartnett (10 points) and Charneice McCullough (10 points).
Gordon was the high scorer for the Lightning with 10 points in 34 minutes of action.
Lehman closes out the regular season on Tuesday when it hosts Rutgers-Newark.
