MARIETTA, Ohio — The Marietta College women's basketball team held off a pesky Heidelberg University squad Saturday (Feb. 12) afternoon for a 59-48 victory inside Ban Johnson Arena. The win improved Marietta's record to 8-15 overall and 4-12 in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Heidelberg fell to 1-22 overall and 0-16 in the OAC. [Box Score]
The Pioneers never trailed in Saturday's contest and the game was only tied twice in the early minutes. Marietta pushed its lead to as many as 10 points, 25-15, with 2:19 to play before halftime. Heidelberg cut the lead in half before intermission and it went into the locker room trailing 27-22.
Marietta overcame a few small runs by the Student Princes throughout the second half. The Pioneer lead was cut down to two points, 41-39, with 7:55 left to play in regulation before Marietta regained control. The Pioneers pushed the lead back up to as many as 13 points before going on to win by 11, 59-48.
Freshman guard Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) led all scorers with 15 points while dishing out two assists. Senior post Mallory Hoff (Newport/Frontier) and sophomore post Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central) each recorded double-doubles on the afternoon. Both players scored 10 points while Hoff grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds and Guiler snagged 12 boards of her own. Hoff also had three steals in the win.
Jenny Miller led Heidelberg with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Kathleen Phillips added 12 points and two assists for the Student Princes in the loss.
Marietta finished shooting 36.2% (21-of-58) from the field, 6.7% (1-of-15) from three and 69.6% (16-of-23) from the free throw line. Heidelberg finished shooting 22.1% (15-of-68) from the field, 7.1% (1-of-14) from three and 73.9% (17-of-23) from the charity stripe. Marietta held a commanding edge on the boards with 57 to Heidelberg's 40.
The Pioneers will play their final home game of the season Wednesday (Feb. 16) night when Capital University visits Ban Johnson Arena for Senior Day. Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m. Hoff will be recognized before the game.
