LaGrange downs Huntingdon for fifth straight win

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - LaGrange downed Huntingdon 73-53 in a GSAC game Saturday at Roland Arena. The Panthers improved to 19-3 overall and remained in second in the GSAC at 11-2.

The win set a new school season record for wins. The 19 wins tops last season's record of 18.

Heather Miller led the Panthers with a game-high 23 points, 17 coming in the second half. She was 6-for-11 from 3-point range.

Katie Covington followed with 15 points and tied with Elizabeth Williams for team honors with seven rebounds. Alex Wilson added 13 points, making 3-of-6 3-point attempts.

The Panthers shot 45.0 percent for the game. They were 9-of-25 from 3-point range. The Panthers had a 47-40 rebounding advantage.

The nine 3-pointers gave the Panthers a team record 193 for the season. This marks the third straight year the Panthers have set a new season record for 3-point shots made.

Huntingdon (9-13, 4-8 GSAC) had lost to the Panthers 109-57 on Jan. 22. The Lady Hawks 9-4 in the early going. They used an 8-0 run to lead 22-21 with four minutes left in the half.

Alex Wilson's layup put the Panthers back up 23-22. The Panthers never trailed again in the game and led 29-26 at halftime.

Huntingdon got within a basket twice in the opening minutes of the second half. Miller's 3-pointer put the Panthers up 43-33 with 13 minutes remaining.

Covington pushed the lead to 13, 55-42,  with a steal and a layup at the other end. Huntingdon stayed close and trailed 61-53 with 3:27 left.

The Panthers finished the game on a 12-0 run for the 73-73 final. Kiah Britton started the run with a layup off an assist from Covington. Wilson finished it with a 3-pointers with 36 seconds left.

The Panthers play at Covenant on Tuesday. Game time is 6 p.m.
