HOBOKEN, N.J. (February 11, 2011) – Junior forward Jillian Barrett (Philadelphia, Pa.) netted a team-high 15 points on 6-for-11 shooting, while fellow junior Victoria Webber (Silver Spring, Md.) added 11 points, as the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team upended visiting Nazareth College, 65-50, during Stevens' WBCA Pink Zone game at Canavan Arena in Hoboken, N.J. With the win, the Ducks improved to 16-5 overall on the season with a 9-3 league ledger, while the Golden Flyers fell to 8-13 on the year with a 4-8 mark against conference opponents.
The Ducks started the game on a 7-2 run thanks to a pair of Barrett baskets and a Dawn Garcia (Brooklyn, N.Y.) three. The Golden Flyers would battle back to within three after a pair of Brittany Wilson (Fairport, N.Y.) free-throws, but another Garcia triple extended the margin to six.
Senior center Paige Armstrong (Fair Haven, N.J.) later upped the lead to eight, connecting on a pair from the charity stripe at the 11:43 mark, but Nazareth quickly pared the lead down with back-to-back Danielle Chamberlain (Castorland, N.Y.) and Brittany Patenaude (Watertown, N.Y.) treys.
Still clinging to a two-point edge with just over seven minutes left in the half, Ducks' freshman forward Avis Benjamin (Queens, N.Y.) hit a layup to make it 20-16, before a Wilson three cut the margin to one. Stevens answered with consecutive Webber and Brianne Lavin (Farmingdale, N.J.) baskets, before another timely Nazareth three cut the Golden Flyers deficit to two.
Hoping to build momentum entering the half, Webber forced a steal near the midcourt line before racing down the floor and laying it in with just over a second left on the clock, giving the Ducks a four-point edge heading into the intermission.
Stevens picked up right where it left off to start the second, putting together a 10-1 run over the first four and a half minutes of action, going up 36-23 on a Victoria O'Connor (Westwood, N.J.) jumper. After a pair of Webber free-throws got things started, Barrett netted four-straight before O'Connor's basket staked the Ducks to a 13-point cushion.
Nazareth responded by tallying eight of the game's next nine points, trimming their deficit to six on a Wilson triple. Looking to pull away, the Ducks mounted a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to go up 15 with 7:13 left in regulation.
The Golden Flyers would make one final run, pulling within nine on consecutive Jenee Vanderstyne (Victor, N.Y.) and Katie Kollar (Johnstown, N.Y.) three-pointers, but an 11-3 Stevens run made it 61-44 with 2:21 to go putting the game out of reach.
Barrett kick-started the Ducks' game-clinching rally with a three-point play, before a Garcia jumper up Stevens up 14. After Wilson's third triple of the night sliced the Stevens lead to 11, Barrett connected on another layup inside before four-straight O'Connor points gave the Ducks a decisive 17-point edge.
Barrett added eight rebounds to go along with her team-best 15 points, while Armstrong had nine points and six boards. O'Connor also finished with nine points, adding four rebounds, while Garcia tallied eight points, four rebounds and three assists in the win. Wilson led all scorers with 18 points and six rebounds, while Patenaude finished with 14 points on 4-for-6 shooting.
Stevens, which forced 21 Golden Flyer turnovers, held Nazareth to a paltry 34 percent shooting percentage (17-for-50), while holding a 45-31 rebounding edge.
Tonight's game represented the Ducks' participation in the WBCA Pink Zone initiative. Formerly known as "Think Pink", the initiative was begun in 2007 to raise breast cancer awareness in women's basketball, on campuses, and in communities. Kay Yow, former North Carolina State University head women's basketball coach, served as the catalyst for the initiative after her third reoccurrence of breast cancer in 2006. In 2007, more than 120 schools unified for this effort and helped make the inaugural year a success.
Overall, the WBCA Pink Zone has raised nearly $3.3 Million, has reached almost 2.7 Million fans, and has unified over 4,700 participants in only four years. The WBCA's charity of choice is the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, in partnership with the WBCA and The V Foundation.
The Ducks return to action on Saturday, February 12 against Rochester Institute of Technology.
