Career-High 27 for Gordon in Win Over CCNY

More news about: Lehman

When the final buzzer sounded to end Lehman's women's basketball matchup against visiting City College of New York on Wednesday night, a temporary look of disappointment could be seen on the faces of Coach Harrison's players.

Not because they had just lost the game, a fact that couldn't be farther from the truth, but because team favorite Taniefa Taylor had just missed her last second attempt at what would have been her first three-pointer of the season.

It was that kind of night for the Lightning as it produced an 84-54 win over the Beavers to run its winning streak to three games and improve to 13-8 on the season. Over its last three contests, Lehman has beaten its opponents by an average of 29 points.

The Beavers managed to score the first point of the game on Alexis Billups free throw, after which the Lightning never looked back in building a double-digit lead over the first 8:30 of action. Leading 22-12, Lehman then hit the Beavers with an 8-0 run behind three baskets by Jaleesa Gordon and a hoop by Amanda De La Cruz to open up a 30-12 lead with 7:07 remaining.

From the get-go, it was evident that the Lightning was looking to establish its leading post player down low and it proved to be an effective strategy as Gordon showed a renewed aggression around the basket on her way to a game and career-high of 27 points. In addition to Gordon's noteworthy scoring night, she also asserted herself on the backboards, grabbing 10 rebounds.

Gordon's first half line of 12 points and seven rebounds complimented strong first halves by De La Cruz (9 points, 4-of-6 shooting) and Louvinia Hayes (11 points, 5-of-11 shooting) to help the Lightning build its 43-23 edge heading into the locker room.

The Lightning also followed its tried and true strategy of using its defense to generate offense as it registered 31 points off 28 Beavers' turnovers.

Hayes finished her evening as the Lightning's second leading scorer with 21 points while De La Cruz notched 19.

Another lengthy layoff follows for the Lightning, as it doesn't return to the court until Senior Night on February 7 against visiting Hunter College.
