ALBION, Mich. - Albion College had trouble scoring early – it made one of its first five shots – but it didn't have much trouble with Trine University once the shots began to fall. First-year guards Brett de Bear and Tanner Johnson scored career highs of 15 and 10, respectively, as the Britons remained in third place in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association with a 64-27 victory over Trine University at Kresge Gymnasium.
In addition to missing shots, Albion committed three turnovers in the opening five minutes. De Bear provided Albion's first six points with a pair of 3-point goals.
Scoring became easier after de Bear's second basket as Patty Rewa converted a layup and Johnson knocked down a "three" as Albion jumped out to an 11-2 lead nearly seven minutes into the game.
Trine never had an answer as its 25 percent shooting from the field was the worst by an Albion opponent this season. The Britons built the margin to double digits on Johnson's free throw midway through the first half and de Bear's jumper with time winding down in the first half made the score 32-12 after 20 minutes of play.
Albion led by as many as 41 in the second half.
Albion shared the basketball as it had assists on 16 of its 22 field goals. Melissa Shaw dished out five assists while Rewa and Keigan Edwards were credited with three apiece.
Albion, winners of four in a four, improved to 12-10 overall and 10-3 against MIAA rivals. The Britons' next game is a 3 p.m. Feb. 12 date against Saint Mary's College. Albion will join the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's "Pink Zone" program to raise awareness of breast cancer and all proceeds will be donated to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund.
