Nor'easters roll to big win over RWU with huge 2nd half

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- The University of New England shot a blistering 59.3 percent (16-for-27) in the final period to rack up 56 points and pull away to a 91-66 victory over Roger Williams University in The Commonwealth Coast Conference women's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Campus Center.

The win is the sixth consecutive for the Nor'easters (15-6, 8-1 TCCC), and ninth in the last 10 outings. The Hawks drop back to 12-8 overall (5-4 TCCC) with their fourth straight setback.

Knotted at 56-56 nearing the midway point of the second half, UNE used a span of 5:28 to go on a 21-1 run and take control of the contest. Senior Chelsey Meszaros (North Clarendon, Vt.) was a force during the stretch, tallying the initial 12 points to kick-off the run. She also two of her four steals in that time.

Big Blue cruised the rest of the way, finishing the stanza going 20 of 23 (87 percent) at the charity stripe, out-rebounding their opponents by six (17-11), and picking up 11 steals off of 14 RWU turnovers.

UNE senior Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) led the way with a game-high 23 points to go with six assists. She scored 17 in the opening frame on 7-of-10 shooting, including knocking down all three attempts from deep.

Junior Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) and Meszaros each recorded 16 points in the second half to total 21 and 19, respectively. Paradis shot 67 percent (8 of 12) for the game and added six steals. Meszaros missed just one shot attempt the entire day, between six field goal tries and six free throws (6-for-6).

The Nor'easters, who shot 54.5 percent (30-for-55) for the game and nearly the same percentage from long range (8 of 15), also received 13 points, eight rebounds, and four assists from junior Margo Russell (Madison, Maine).

For Roger Williams, first-year Kaitlin Bovee (Berlin, Conn.) notched a team-high 16 points to go with seven boards. Classmate Ali Renwick (Westwood, Mass.) came in off the bench to post 13 points, and sophomore Alexandria Lanieri (Port Jerfferson, N.Y.) chipped in with 10 -- all coming in the first half.

Hawks junior Paige Congdon (Westwood, Mass.) corralled a team-best eight caroms, helping her team end the contest with a 34-27 rebounding margin. The visitors also canned half of their 20 three-point attempts on the afternoon.

After falling behind 8-0 less than three minutes into the match, UNE trailed on the scoreboard for the full 20 minutes of the initial period. A trey from RWU senior Kate Malenczak (Sayville, N.Y.) pushed the deficit to its highest at 10 (22-12) with 8:23 gone, before the hosts rallied to get within two (37-35) at the break.

Both teams are on the road for league dates on Tuesday at 6 p.m. Big Blue visits Endicott College (8-1 TCCC) for a key conference battle, while the Hawks travel to Anna Maria College.
