Trinity Women's Basketball Clinches Post-Season With Win Against Tufts

Hartford, Conn. – Junior guard Michelle Royals (Torrington, Conn.) had a game-high 16 points and the Trinity College Bantams held the visiting Tufts University Jumbos to 15 field goals in 71 attempts for 21.1 percent field goal shooting in a 63-48 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's basketball action this afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium.  Trinity improves to 13-8 overall and 3-4 in the NESCAC with its first victory in four games, while the Jumbos, ranked No. 10 in the Northeast, fall to 15-5 overall and 4-4 in the league with its second loss in as many days.  Trinity, which snaps a six-game losing streak against Tufts, has qualified for the NESCAC Championship Tournament for the eighth time and the third year in a row. 

Trinity led, 18-13, at the half, holding Tufts to five field goals in 33 attempts to offset its own 33.3 percent field goal shooting, and went ahead by double digits, 34-23, on a put-back by junior guard Kaitlin Ciarleglio (Waterbury, Conn.) at the 12:26 mark.  Trinity built a second-half advantage of 45-27 at the midway point on a traditional three-point play by Royals, and held a comfortable lead the rest of the way. 

Ciarleglio and sophomore Carly Napier (Pittsford, N.Y.) joined Royals in double figures in scoring for Trinity with 14 and 10 points, respectively, while Ciarlegio also notched four assists and three steals.  Senior tri-captain forward Rebecca Cohn (San Francisco, Calif.) was Trinity's top rebounder with seven, and senior tri-captai guard Kristen Fahey (Cumberland, R.I.) dished out a team-high five assists.  Junior guard Tiffany Kornegay (Carver, Mass.) paced Tufts with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and three steals, while senior tri-captain guard Colleen Hart (Needham, Mass.) added 11 points, seven boards, and three steals.  Tufts was 4-for-20 from long range and missed 10 of 24 free throws, while Trinity made seven treys in 17 tries and was 14-for-17 from the foul line.  The teams combined to commit 39 turnovers.  Tufts held a 49-42 advantage on the glass.
