Late surge lift Tommies

Freshman Taylor Young had 19 points and the first-place Tommie women's basketball team used a game-ending 20-6 run to post a 61-50 win over visiting St. Catherine in Saturday's MIAC game at Schoenecker Arena.

UST won its fifth consecutive game in a 10-day stretch and is now 8-1 in MIAC home play in the inaugural season of the Anderson Athletic and Recreation Complex.

The Tommies' Rachel Booth had 10 points, nine rebounds and four steals, and Sarah Smith added 10 points. Jazmin Townsend had seven points, five blocks, four assists and five rebounds.

St. Thomas was outscored 27-9 from 3-point range but made 14-of-17 free throws and had only 13 turnovers.

Laura Kalbfell had 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Wildcats (4-16, 3-14).

The Toms (16-5 overall, 15-3 MIAC) remain in a share of the conference lead with St. Ben's, a winner Saturday at Augsburg. Concordia lost by two at home to Bethel and dropped two games back.

UST is home Wednesday night to face Carleton.
