Michelle Briggs '13 already owned the Grinnell College school record for blocked shots in a women's basketball game.
Now she's best of all-time in the Midwest Conference.
Briggs swatted away a league-record 12 shots and also scored a game-high 16 points as the Pioneers rolled past the Ripon College Red Hawks 65-43 Friday at Darby Gymnasium. Grinnell shot 50 percent from the field (25-of-50), a season-high.
Briggs, who had four blocks at halftime, broke her school record of eight at the 9:52 mark of the second half when she rejected her ninth shot of the game. Her 10th block came with 9:45 left, and her 11th that broke the MWC record of 10 established by Caresse Reiland of Lawrence University in 2008 came at the 9:00 mark.
She added one more block for good measure with 7:03 left. The win pushes Grinnell to 6-7 in the MWC and 7-10 overall as the Pioneers snapped a three-game losing streak. It also avenged a loss to Ripon in December.
Grinnell had three players score 10 points, those being Rebecca DeGroot '14, Jessica Vaverka '11 and Karen Gogins '13. Vaverka also had nine boards, while DeGroot, Gogins and Abby Jaeger '14 had two steals each. Ashley Jeannin '12 dished out four assists.
Chelsea Archer had 12 points for the Red Hawks, who are 4-10 in the MWC and 5-14 overall.
Ripon led 14-13 at the 6:32 mark of the first half before Grinnell closed with a 14-2 run for a 27-16 halftime lead. Briggs had seven points during the run, Vaverka a 3-pointer and DeGroot and Gogins two points each.
It was still a seven-point game midway through the second half before Grinnell delivered the decisive blow with a seven-point run. Vaverka began things with a basket, Gogins hit a jumper and free throw and Toluwaloju Alabi '13 made a bucket to put Grinnell up 43-29 with 9:18 left.
The Pioneers continued to cruise, going ahead by as many as 25 before winning by 22.
Grinnell entertains nationally-ranked St. Norbert College at 2 p.m. Saturday at Darby Gymnasium.
