ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. — Double-doubles from junior Stephanie Ellwood and senior Kaity Snyder helped the Elizabethtown College women's basketball team erase a double-digit first half deficit and secure a crucial 57-52 Commonwealth Conference win over the Alvernia Crusaders Saturday at Thompson Gymnasium.
Early on, Snyder converted a 3-point play with a layup and a trip to line at the 15:20 mark to give E-town (11-7, 3-5) a 10-5 lead. The senior captain finished with a game-high 18 points on 6-of-10 shooting and grabbed 10 rebounds along the way.
The Blue Jays' fortunes quickly turned, however, with the Crusaders (11-8, 4-4) taking advantage of a 7-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 12-10 lead. Alvernia's biggest lead came with 1:16 to go before the half on a jumper by Angela Altemose for a 25-14 lead. Altemose led the Crusaders with 15 points and 13 rebounds on the afternoon.
E-town was able to cut the lead to a more manageable 25-19 deficit and despite 13 first half turnovers, the Jays found themselves down just six points heading into halftime.
Ellwood and Snyder took over in the second half, with Ellwood scoring all 10 of her points and ripping down nine of her 13 rebounds in the final 20 minutes. It was the junior's first double-double of the season. Snyder had a good second half of her own with 14 points and three rebounds. For Snyder, it was her seventh double-double on the year, three of which have come in E-town's last four games.
The Blue Jays also did much better protecting the ball in the second half with just five turnovers.
An Ellwood 3-pointer gave the Blue Jays their first lead of the second half at 35-33 with 13:43 left in the game. The evenly matched game went back and forth with nine second half lead changes. After losing the lead, junior Kelly Sauerzopf helped the Jays regain it with a layup with 6:39 left to make the score 45-44. Sauerzopf contributed six points and six rebounds for E-town in the game.
Ellwood put the Jays up for good by hitting clutch free throws with 1:31 and 13 seconds left to secure the victory.
Senior Megan Strohman chipped in with eight points and six boards, while junior Nadine Yunginger added nine points.
At 3-5 in the Commonwealth Conference, E-town is now a game back of Alvernia for the fourth and final playoff spot. The team has now won two games in a row and improved its record to 8-3 at home this season.
The Blue Jays return to Thompson Gymnasium at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 1, for another conference test against the third-place Messiah Falcons.
