Hot Perimeter Shooting Leads #11 CNU Past Peace, 79-35

RALEIGH, N.C. -- Behind a strong shooting performance from beyond the arc, namely from Chelsie Schweers and Kelly Halverson, the 11th ranked Captains surged past the Peace Pacers (7-10, 3-8) in USA South Athletic Conference action, 79-35. Schweers and Halverson combined to knock down nine three-pointers, including seven in the first half as Christopher Newport (17-2, 11-1) opened up a big lead.

The Captains opened up a 38-point lead at halftime, holding the Pacers to just 15 first-half points. CNU scored 25 of the first 27 points, and held Peace to just one made field goal in the first 10:40 of game time, extending the run to 36-4.

Schweers scored 21 of her game-high 29 in the first 20 minutes, despite playing just 11 minutes. Halverson had all 16 of her career-high-tying mark in the first half as the two combined to do the bulk of the scoring.

In the second half, CNU led by as many as 49 points on a Jerlisa Bowser bucket with 5:44 remaining. Bowser played well for the Captains, scoring six points and adding four rebounds. Freshman Nicole Mitchell grabbed a team-high seven rebounds as the Captains held a dominant advantage on the boards, 45-31.

CNU shot nearly 50% from the field in the game on 32-65 shooting, and the defense continued to impress, holding Peace to just 23% on 11 made field goals.

Mia Sloan and Megan Bridges led the way for Peace, as Sloan scored nine points while Bridges had eight. Angel Fuller, Megan Sherrill and Karissa Herring each had four points and four rebounds for the Pacers.

The Captains return to action tomorrow, as they take on Meredith College at 2:00 pm in Raleigh.
