Inferno offense iced in loss to WLC

MILWAUKEE -- Alverno College was held to its lowest offensive output this season in a 56-35 loss to host Wisconsin Lutheran College tonight at the Recreation Complex.

The Inferno shot a season-low 27 percent (13-of-48) from the field, including just 2-of-12 from the 3-point arc.

"I just felt like we were a beat off all night," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "Right from the get go we had a couple of breakdowns in assignments and let a good team get the lead. They played confident and in front all night, while we were playing catch up after the first two possessions."

The Warriors (15-3, 10-2 Northern Athletics Conference) started the game up 4-0 and increased the lead to 13-3 just 6 minutes into play. Alverno scored their first three points from the free-throw line until Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) scored the first Inferno field goal at the 13:49 mark in the first half.
The Warriors extended the lead to 30-13 at intermission, and then opened up the second half with a 7-2 run to take their largest lead of the game at 37-15. The Inferno (8-10, 5-7) finally started to get things going offensively as they cut the lead to 12 with 11 minutes remaining, but could only come up with six points the rest of the way for the 56-35 final.

"We hung in there, and without a starter on the floor for us, we took the game from 22 to 12 and played hard, but ran out of gas. In typical Alverno fashion, we didn't quit, we kept working hard.

"Defensively to hold them to 56 wasn't bad, we just have to score."

The Inferno held the Warriors, who came into the game averaging over 70 points a game, to one of their lowest point totals of the season. The hosts shot under 40 percent from the field (23-of-59) and just 26 percent (5-of-19) from the 3-point arc.

Kontowski led Alverno in scoring for the third-straight game with 11 points on 4-of-10 shooting, while Erika Laete paced the Warriors with a game-high 23 points on 10-of-22 shooting.

Alverno will play its third game this week on Saturday at Benedictine University in a NAC contest. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m. in Lisle, Ill.
