POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—The William Smith basketball team snapped Vassar's five-game winning streak and in the process extended its dominance of the Brewers to 22 games with a 66-57 Liberty League victory tonight. The Herons broke open a tight game with a 10-2 run in the second half.
William Smith (7-8, 2-2) never trailed after a Kristen Kush jumper tied the game at 20-all with 9:05 left in the first half. Kush's bucket came just a short time after a 10-0 run by Vassar (8-6, 3-1) had reversed a 5-point Heron lead.
The Brewers forged a pair of ties over the next five minutes, but William Smith took the lead for good on Mollie Danahy's jumper with 3:35 remaining in the first half. The Herons carried a 33-28 advantage into the break.
Despite having only one forward in the lineup, controlled the paint, outscoring their host 18-12 in the first 20 minutes and 36-24 for the game.
William Smith wasn't able to pull away from Vassar until the second half was five minutes old. Clinging to a 44-39 lead, Kush hit a jumper followed by back-to-back scores by Danahy to stretch the lead to 11. Ali Higgins interrupted the surge with her only basket of the night, but Jacqueline Murphy knocked down a jumper and Kush hit two free throws to give the Herons their largest lead of the night, 54-41.
Brittany Parks made three straight baskets for Vassar to shrink a 12-point William Smith lead down to just six, 59-53, with 3:40 to go. William Smith held off the comeback bid with the next three points of the game and led by at least seven the rest of the way.
Kush paced the Herons with 25 points. She was 10-of-19 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the line. Kush also grabbed eight rebounds and shared game-high honors with three steals. Danahy added 10 points, five rebounds, a game-high five assists, and three steals. Murphy grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as the Herons posted a 45-39 advantage on the glass.
Parks led all scorers with 30 points, including 19 of her team's 29 second half markers. Cyndi Matsuoka and Hannah Senftleber chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Brewers.
