MADISON, Wis. - In a battle between two of the Northern Athletics Conference North Division's top teams, the Wisconsin Lutheran women's basketball team started the game as hot as Edgewood College was cold. The Eagles closed the margin in the second half, but could not overcome a 23-point first half deficit, falling to the Warriors 57-49 at the Edgedome. The loss snapped Edgewood College's 10-game home court winning streak which dated back to last season.
Edgewood College (10-6, 8-2 NAC) led 5-2 after a Shae Beckwith three-point basket, but the Warriors responded with an avalanche of points led by Erika Laete. The senior post player scored eight points to ignite a 28-2 run over a 10 minute span of the first half. Rachel Hoft ended the run with a three-point basket to give Wisconsin Lutheran College (12-3, 7-2 NAC) a commanding 30-7 lead. The Eagles trimmed the lead to 36-18 by halftime, thanks in part to a three-point basket and a buzzer beating layup by Alison Tobin.
Edgewood College regained their form in the second half and threatened to make a game of it. The Eagles best spurt was started by another Tobin layup. Danielle Dixon followed with three baskets including a pair of three-point shots, and Beckwith added a short jumper for a 14-4 Eagle run, to cut the lead to 55-44 with just under four minutes to play.
Tobin made her second three-point basket of the night and Chelsey Watkins scored a short baseline jumper to get as close as seven points, but four three-point shots in the final minute of play failed to fall allowing the Warriors to claim the 57-49 victory.
Dixon led the Eagles in scoring for the second straight game, totaling 18 points. Tobin added 12 points and seven rebounds. Beckwith led the team with five assists while Bylsma had a team-high eight rebounds and five steals. Edgewood College shot 32.3 percent from the field and only made six trips to the free throw line, making four.
The Warriors were led by Laete who scored nine points in each half to finish with 18 for the game. Backcourt mates Krissy Day and Alyssa Allister chipped in 10 points apiece, while Day had a team-high five assists. Wisconsin Lutheran outrebounded the Eagles 46-34 and forced 20 turnovers for the night.
The victory creates a logjam of teams at the top of the NAC North Division. Three teams all have two losses apiece, with idle Concordia Wisconsin (9-2), holding a slim lead on both Edgewood College (8-2) and Wisconsin Lutheran (7-2). The Eagles will take the weekend off before a potential first place showdown with Concordia Wisconsin in Mequon on Tuesday.
