Big first half helps John Carroll down Marietta women 99-66

MARIETTA, Ohio — Marietta College suffered a 99-66 home loss to John Carroll University in Ohio Athletic Conference women's basketball action Saturday (Jan. 15) afternoon inside Ban Johnson Arena. [Box Score]

The Blue Streaks, who snapped a five-game losing streak, improved to 8-7 overall, while the Pioneers fell to 7-8. Both teams are now 3-5 in the league.

John Carroll and its second-best scoring offense in the OAC came out on fire and built a 17-4 lead just 4:31 into the action. The Pioneers briefly cut the deficit to eight with a 5-0 run. The Blue Streaks then got back on track and continued to boost their advantage throughout the first half, allowing them to take a 53-22 lead into intermission.

Marietta played a much more even game as both squads emptied their bench over the final 20 minutes but the results was never in doubt as John Carroll prevailed 99-66.

Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central) led Marietta with 13 points and seven rebounds. Mallory Hoff (Newport/Frontier), Rachel Jones (Dublin/Coffman), Paige Bucher (Cardington/Cardington), Danielle Lang (Lowell/Fort Frye) and Kyle Sheridan (Dresden/Granville) all added six points for the Pioneers, who shot 37.3% (25-of-67) from the floor and 26.3% (5-of-19) from three-point range.

Emilee Ritchie paced the Blue Streaks with 25 points. Lee Jennings finished with 20 points, and five rebounds and seven assists. Melissa Spahar added19 points and Heidi Mervar had 12 for the Blue Streaks, who shot 53.5% (38-of-71) overall and 42.3% (11-of-26) from beyond the arc.

Marietta is back in action Wednesday (Jan. 19) night when it visits Wilmington College for a tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
