DECORAH - Stacey Schutjer posted her first double-double of the season and the Simpson defense suffocated Luther in a 55-36 win Saturday in Decorah.

Despite a slow night offensively, the Storm (12-3, 6-0 IIAC) held Luther to 11 of 46 shooting on the day. In the second half, Simpson forced the home team into 20 percent shooting from the field.

The win extends Simpson's winning streak to 11 games, giving the Storm sole possession of first place in the Iowa Conference standings. Previously undefeated and nationally-ranked Wartburg lost to Coe, 51-39 on Saturday.

Schutjer led Simpson in all phases of the game, scoring a team-high 13 points with 14 rebounds and five blocked shots. The junior committed only two fouls and logged a season-high 29 minutes.

Sam Jewell led all scorers with 20 points, adding 13 rebounds for the Norse (5-10, 1-5 IIAC).

The first half saw both teams struggle offensively. Simpson shot only 28.1 percent from the field, but went to the locker room with a 21-19 lead at intermission.

The Storm answered their first-half shooting woes with a 14-4 run in the first six minutes of the second half. Jamie Elbert's 3-pointer closed the run, which resulted in a 12-point Simpson lead.

Simpson shot 39.3 percent from the field in the second half, improving more than 10 percentage points from the opening 20 minutes.

The Norse couldn't shrink the deficit below eight the rest of the way and didn't make a field goal in the final 5 minutes. Bethany Van Sloten's 3-pointer with 5:27 left closed the scoring for the home team.

Mindy Hutchcroft and Tess Myer each scored seven points and Kara Engebretson handed out a game-high five assists.

Simpson takes its perfect conference record on the road Monday, Jan. 17 when it goes to Storm Lake for a matchup with Buena Vista. The Beavers (7-8, 3-3 IIAC) lost to Dubuque, 85-70 on Saturday.
