ROCKFORD, Ill. - When a basketball team can rebound and protect the ball the way the Edgewood College women's basketball team did against Rockford College they have the potential to be a first place team. After Saturday's 73-68 overtime victory over the Regents, that's exactly where the Eagles find themselves in the Northern Athletics Conference's North Division.

Edgewood College (10-5, 8-1 NAC) nearly let an eight-point lead in the final five minutes of regulation slip away. A jumper by Danielle Dixon and a pair of Shae Beckwith free throws put the Eagles ahead 56-48 with 4:34 left in the second half. Rockford College proceeded to score the next eight straight points, capped by a Megan Lawler layup with two minutes left to play. Dixon scored again off an assist by Brittany Bylsma with 38 seconds left, only to have Rockford's Melissa Swaziek tie the game at 58 ten seconds later. The Eagles set up a game-winning shot for Dixon, but her effort missed the mark and the two teams went to overtime.

In the extra session, the Regents clung to a slim 66-65 lead with 2:02 left to play when Bylsma scored on a short jumper to give Edgewood College the lead. The Eagles forced a missed shot from the Regents and Dixon converted another bucket for a 69-66 lead. After the Regents' Kelcy Thorsen scored with 38 seconds left Beckwith sliced through the lane for a layup to maintain the Eagles' three-point lead. On the Regents final possession Dixon came up with steal of Rockford's Swaziek and converted two clinching free throws for the 73-68 victory. Edgewood College went 5-for-6 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line in the extra period.

Just 10 days removed from a career-high game at UW-Whitewater, Dixon turned in what was likely the best all-around performance of her career. The sophomore from Benton, posted 20 points and doubled her previous career-high with 10 rebounds. Beckwith, a senior from East Troy, continued to be the floor leader the Eagles need, scoring 18 points and leading the team with three assists and four steals. Bylsma went 7-for-11 from the floor and nearly matched a career-high with 15 points.

Edgewood College committed just 12 turnovers and positively hammered the offensive glass with a whopping 24 offensive rebounds. Front and center was sophomore Alison Tobin who pulled down 10 offensive rebounds and a career-high 13 for the game. The win marked second-year head coach Casey Thousand's first overtime victory of her career in three tries.

Rockford College received a monster game from Lawler who scored 22 points and pulled down 20 rebounds in 41 minutes of playing time. The Regents shot 41 percent from the field, but turned the ball over 24 times.

Edgewood College sits alone atop the NAC's North Division at 8-1, but Wisconsin Lutheran College at 11-3 and 6-2 in the NAC looms next. The Eagles face the Warriors next Wednesday at the Edgedome at 7:00 p.m.
