Trailing 47-40 with 13:38 remaining, the Seahawks reeled off 11 straight points over a 5:09 span to take a 51-47 advantage. Salve would lead the rest of the way, improving its record to 11-3 (3-0 TCCC) with its sixth straight win.
Senior Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.) paced the balanced Seahawk attack with 15 points. She added eight rebounds, four steals, three blocks and three assists. Junior Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) overcame foul issues to finish with 14 points, eight boards and four blocked shots. Sophomore Kaitlyn Birrell (Hope, R.I.) chipped in 14 points and six assists.
For UNE (9-6, 2-1), juniors Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) and Margo Russell (Madison, Maine) scored 16 points apiece. The duo combined for 13 caroms while Paradis had three steals. Senior Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.) added 10 points.
After a layup by Bunnell gave UNE a 6-5 lead in the opening minutes, Big Blue would lead the remainder of the frame. The Nor'easters' first-half lead crested at 10 (31-21) on a bucket by junior Kari Pelletier (South Paris, Maine), but Salve would close the half with an 8-2 spurt to make the score 33-29 at the break.
UNE got off to a 10-4 start in the second half to lead 43-33 before the Seahawks began to chip away and set the stage for their 11 unanswered points.
The Nor'easters suffered from 26.7 percent (8 of 30) shooting after halftime. For the game, Salve Regina dominated the backboards to the tune of a 52-35 difference while racking up 10 blocked shots.
Both teams return to action Wednesday (Jan. 19) with TCCC games. The Nor'easters host Eastern Nazarene College at 6 p.m. Salve Regina will look to make it seven straight wins, traveling to Nichols College for a 7:30 p.m. start.
