Centre survives late Hendrix surge for 60-59 decision

DANVILLE, Ky. (Jan. 14) -- Junior Anna Roane brought Hendrix College to within one point on a last second 3-pointer, however, Centre College would survive for a thrilling 60-59 victory on Friday night at Alumni Gymnasium.

Senior Christina Byler made it a five-point game with 2:15 left in regulation and Roane went 1-for-1 from the charity stripe on the Warriors' next possession, 58-54, with 1:46 to go. Hendrix missed a pair of 3-pointers in the last minute until first year Jamie Tate hit a layup with 22 ticks left on the clock, 58-56.

The Warriors (6-8, 3-3 SCAC) were forced to foul to stop the clock and Centre (10-5, 4-2 SCAC) junior Maggie Prewitt drained two clutch free throws with 10 seconds left. Hendrix hustled the ball down the court and Roane made her chance from behind the arc count, 60-59, with just 00:02 showing on the clock. The Warriors fouled on the inbound but the Colonels missed on the back end of their two chances from the line and time expired as the two teams fought for the rebound.

Neither team led by more than nine points in the nip and tuck Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) cross-divisional affair. Centre led for the last 30:44 and took a 34-29 advantage into th locker room at intermission. The Colonels scored 14 points off the Warriors' 18 turnovers. Hendrix scored just four points in the paint in the first half and then pounded the ball inside for 16 points in the second half.

Prewitt finished with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while sophomore Chelsea Benham led Centre with 18 points. Junior Lauren Huter also grabbed eight rebounds.

Roane led Hendrix and matched her career-high mark with 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the field. She was 4-of-7 from long range and also snagged five rebounds. Junior Katy Ashley-Pauley added nine points, while Byler, Tate and junior Samantha Devlin scored eight points apiece. Tate paced the Warriors with nine boards.

Hendrix falls to 22-11 all-time against Centre. The Warriors will now travel to No. 10 DePauw University on Sunday, Jan. 16 for a 12 p.m. ET contest.
