Newark, NJ: The Ramapo College women's basketball team fell to NJAC rival Rutgers-Newark University, 61-51 on the road at the Golden Dome. The Roadrunners fall to 9-5, 1-3 in the conference while the Scarlet Raiders improve to 13-2, 4-1 in the conference.
The Roadrunners took a 27-26 lead into halftime after shooting 42% from the field (12-28). Ramapo got on the board first on a made jumper by Faith Flannery before going up by four, 6-2 on a basket by Samantha Maggio before Rutgers-Newark made three straight baskets to take a 8-6 lead. Danielle Beam tied the game at eight before Lindsey Jachens put Ramapo back on top, 10-8 with a made basket at 15:02, she was assisted by Lindsey Gripenburg.
Ramapo webnt up by six points, 14-8 with 13:23 on the clock as Flannery made a layup. The Scarlet Raiders made three straight baskets over the next five minutes, to tie the game as Ramapo couldn't come up with a shot before Flannery made a layup at 6:29 on the clock to take a two point lead. The Roadrunners went on a 11-6 run capped off by Gripenburg's three pointer at 2:30 to take a six point lead, 27-21 before Rutgers-Newark scored the final five points of the half to come within one at the half, 27-26.
In the second half the Scarlet Raiders went up five, 34-29 before Ramapo came back with six made free throws to go up one, 35-34, at 14:32, as Micaela Moore hit both free throws. The game was tied at 40 with 11:18 remaining before the Roadrunners would take a one point lead for the final time in the game, 41-40 on a made free throw by Danielle Beam. The Scarlet Raiders went up three, 44-41 before Flannery made a basket at 9:11 to come within one, 44-43. Rutgers Newark then started to pull away with 5:49 on the clock with a three pointer by Jared Tactuck to go up five, 53-48 and never looked back hitting the final shot of the game with 2:14 to go to go up ten, 61-51.
Flannery led the Roadrunners with 16 points as she was 7-8 from the field and 2-4 from the foul line while Gripenburg tallied 12 points as she hit three three-pointers and grabbed six rebounds. She also dished out three assists and recorded three steals. Moore added eight points and eight rebounds of her own along with four blocked shots while Beam added a team high nine rebounds. Jachens was a perfect 2-2 from the field, recording four points and two rebounds. Maggio added five points, six boards and two assists.
The Roadrunners return to action on Saturday when they travel to NJAC rival Rutgers-Camden University for a 1:00pm game.
