PLYMOUTH, N.H. – Freshmen Colleen Hooper (Mansfield, Mass.) and Kendra Mosley (Indian Head, Md.) scored 19 points apiece Tuesday evening to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston to a 65-52 victory over Plymouth State University in Little East Conference women's basketball action at Foley Gymnasium.
Hooper scored 17 of her 19 points in the second half while Mosley collected a game-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Elisa Ogawa (Yamanashi, Japan) also scored 10 points for the Beacons, who improved to 10-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.
Plymouth State got a game-high 20 points from senior Amanda Kania (Manchester, N.H./West), but she was the only Panther to reach double figures in scoring. Junior Michaela Galvin (Windham, N.H.) scored eight points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds, while sophomore Colleen O'Hara (Otego, N.Y.) finished with eight points and six boards. PSU leading scorer Alicia Doucet (Manchester, N.H./Central) returned from a two-game absence because of illness, but managed just five points. It was the fifth straight loss by the Panthers, who drop to 7-6 overall and 1-3 in the Little East.
The Panthers took control of the game midway through the first half, and went on a 15-4 burst to open up a nine-point advantage (24-15). UMB rallied to cut the margin to one point (26-25), but Kania hit a late three-pointer for PSU to make it a four-point game at the half.
PSU maintained a slim advantage over the first eight minutes of the second half. The teams were tied 44-all with six minutes to play when the Panthers went cold and the Beacons heated up. UMB outscored the home team 13-2 over the next four minutes to claim an 11-point bulge with two minutes on the clock. PSU got no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
The Beacons shot 42 percent from the field while holding the Panthers to a 25 percent shooting clip. PSU made just 6-of-29 from long distance, including 1-of-14 in the second half.
PSU is back in action with an LEC game Saturday at Rhode Island College, while the Beacons return home to host Bridgewater State Thursday in a non-conference affair.
