GETTYSBURG, Pa. – The weather put a damper on attendance for Tuesday's Centennial Conference affair between Gettysburg College and Bryn Mawr College, but those that braved the snow saw a bit of history as the Bullets broke a school record with 31 assists in an 81-34 victory.
Gettysburg (9-3, 4-3 CC) earned its fifth-straight win as five players reached double figures in the scoring column. Junior Sara Kinsley (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Ludlowe) and freshman Caroline Murphy (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) dominated the post, combining for 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the field to go with 10 rebounds and five blocked shots.
The Bullets took a double-digit lead less than four minutes into the contest and held a 25-3 advantage at 11:09 following a lay-up by Murphy. The squad shot 60 percent from the field in the first half with another bucket in the paint by Kinsley giving the hosts a 43-11 advantage at halftime.
After posting an assist on all 18 field goals in the opening stanza, Gettysburg added seven more helpers before a post move by Murphy broke the streak and set the score at 63-16 at 12:49. The record-breaking assist came on the host's second-to-last a field goal as junior Brittany Jones (Canton, N.Y./Hugh C. Williams) dished the ball to senior guard Mary Spicer (Floral Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) for an open jumper just under the two-minute mark.
The 31 assists topped the previous single-game record of 29 set first against Johns Hopkins University on Feb. 7, 1985 and tied in a game with Haverford College on Jan. 13, 2005. Gettysburg's tally fell five shy of the Centennial Conference record notched by Muhlenberg College against Haverford in 2004.
Gettysburg tallied its best shooting performance of the season, knocking down 34-of-62 attempts (54.8 percent), including hitting 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. The defense also forced a season-high 33 turnovers, which led to 37 points on the offensive end.
Murphy put together her best stat line this season, finishing 5-of-6 from the field with a pair of free throws en route to a season-high 12 points. She also posted personal marks with five assists and three steals to go with five rebounds. Kinsley posted a team-high 14 points and blocked four shots, moving just two swats shy of 100 for her career.
Freshman Rianna Doane (Glen Mills, Pa./Bayard Rustin) canned a trio of three-pointers as part of a 13-point night and Spicer finished with a season-high 11 points and five assists. Sophomore Alyssa Oursler (Middletown, Md./Middletown) rounded out Gettysburg's top scorers with 10 points and she handed out four assists.
Lindsey Darvin led Bryn Mawr with 16 points and Aislinn Toohey added 14.
Gettysburg heads to Ursinus College for its next outing on Thursday, Jan. 13, as part of a doubleheader with the men's team. The women tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8.
