Gorham, ME—Senior guard Kaylie DeMillo (Jay, ME) sank a three from the baseline as time expired to give the University of Southern Maine Huskies a 74-71 win over the Rhode Island College Anchorwomen in a Little East Conference women's basketball game Tuesday night at Hill Gymnasium in Gorham, Maine.

The Huskies (8-6, 3-1 LEC) continue to hold the Anchorwomen's (10-3, 2-2 LEC) number, having defeated RIC in their last five meetings and 29 of the last 30 contests. It was the third straight win for the hosts, while the visitors see a four-game win streak come to an end.

Junior forward Courtney Cochran (Waite, ME) recorded her team-leading eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Huskies. Sophomore forward Haley Jordan (Falmouth, ME) added a career-high 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds, while senior forward Becky Dixon (Gardiner, ME) added nine points and six rebounds off of the bench.  DeMillo and freshman guard Erin McNamara (West Newbury, MA) each had eight points and McNamara added six assists.

Junior forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, RI) led all scorers with her 10th double-double of the season with 21 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.  Sophomore forward Courtney Burns (Rockland, MA) added 15 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Stephanie Coro (North Providence, RI) added 14 points.  Junior guard Nicole Girard (Foster, RI) chipped in with eight points and six assists.

With both teams exchanging blows in a closely contested game, Southern Maine dealt the knock out punch in the waning seconds of regulation to secure the win.  Leading by one point at the half, Southern Maine banged back and forth with the Anchorwomen in the final 20 minutes of the game as the score was tied between the two teams nine times with neither team grabbing more than a four-point advantage.

Southern Maine led RIC by two, 69-67, with 46 seconds to play following one of two free throws from junior guard Renee Nicholas (Sebago, ME) before Riley knotted the score up at 69-69 on the Anchorwomen's next possession with two free throws for the eighth tie score of the half and 13th of the game.

On USM's ensuing possession, Cochran powered her way in the paint for a basket to put the Huskies up, 71-69, with 24 seconds to play. The Huskies' Dixon blocked the Anchorwomen's next shot, but Burns secured an offensive rebound and scored the put back to even the score at 71 with 14 seconds to play. Quickly bringing the ball up the court, McNamara found DeMillo off of a screen for the game-winner.

Southern Maine finished the game shooting 49.2 percent (30-for-61) from the field and 50.0 percent (5-for-10) from the three-point line. Rhode Island College shot 44.8 percent (26-for-58) from the field and were an outstanding 94.4 percent (17-for-18) from the free throw line.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference action at home against Plymouth State on Saturday, Jan. 15.
