NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team placed five players in double figures on Monday night as they rolled to a 72-41 victory over the Sage Colleges. The Knights improved to 11-2 overall (8-0) and dropped the Gators to 4-8 (3-5 Skyline).
The Mount trailed 5-4 after a back-and-forth start but would soon take control with a 16-0 run. A layup from sophomore Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.J.) at the 11:11 mark completed the run and sent the Knights to a 20-5 advantage. Sage sophomore Carly Vallee (East Greenbush, N.Y.) answered with a triple, but it would be as close as the Gators would get for the rest of the contest. Mount Saint Mary carried a 37-17 advantage into the break and cruised in the second half for a 31-point victory.
Junior Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) led all scorers with 12 points off the bench. Sophomore Kate Hartnett (Floral Park, N.Y.) added 11 points and eight boards, while junior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) also chipped in with 11 points. Senior Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) and junior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) both found their way to double figures with 10 points apiece.
Vallee led the Gators with 11 points, connecting three times from three-point range. Junior Sarah Carciobolo (Niskayuna, N.Y.) added seven points and three assists, while sophomore Ashleigh Nelson (Rome, N.Y.) contributed five points and four helpers.
The Knights shot 46.9-percent from the field and limited the Gators to just 34.1-percent. Mount Saint Mary also forced Sage into 24 turnovers.
The Mount returns to action on Thursday evening with a tough non-conference matchup with Western Connecticut State. The tip is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. inside the Kaplan Center.
