YORK, PA – The York College women's basketball team saw their losing streak reach four as the Spartans fell to the University of Mary Washington 54-45 in a Capital Athletic Conference contest on Saturday afternoon in York. The Spartans fall to 6-7 overall and 3-2 in the CAC while the Eagles improve to 8-5 overall and 4-1 in the league.

Jenna McRae paced the Eagles with 13 points while Brittany Hick and Jaimie Sapp led the Spartans with 12 points each.

The opening half saw the Spartans struggle again to put the ball in the basket as they shot a paltry 23.1% from the floor. The Eagles outscored York 12-4 over the opening 9:16 of play as the Spartans could not find the hoop. Fortunately for York, they held the Eagles to just the 12 points as the Spartans struggled on the offensive end.

Mary Washington pushed the lead to 18-8 with 5:19 left in the opening half but a Sapp layup followed by a Kelsey Murphy triple trimmed the lead to five. The Eagles answered with a McRae three and a Claire Brooks three-point play to push the lead to a half-high 11 points at 24-13. Sapp closed out the half with an up and under bucket to trim the Spartan deficit to nine at 24-15.

The second half featured a furious Spartan comeback that came up just short. The Spartans trailed 40-16 with 12:11 left in the game. The Green and White embarked on one of their best stretches of the season, outscoring Mary Washington 25-4 over the next 11 minutes to draw to within three at 44-41 with 3:50 left in the game.

The Eagles pushed the lead back to six on a Katie Wimmer jumper but a pair of Hicks free throws cut the lead to three at 48-45 with 39 seconds showing on the clock. The Eagles then converted six straight free throws while the Spartans went dry from the floor as the guests hung on for the nine-point win.

McRae finished her night shooting 4-of-10 including 1-of-4 from three and 4-of-6 from the free throw line. She added six rebounds and two steals. Wimmer contributed 10 points, five rebounds and three steals, as she was the other Eagle to reach double figures. Rachel Martin added eight points and six steals to the Mary Washington effort.

Hicks and Sapp both played well for York. Hicks was hampered by foul trouble but still managed to record her 12 points and five rebounds. She was 1-for-5 from the floor but nailed 10-of-13 from the free throw line. Sapp was 6-for-13 from the floor while she also contributed six rebounds and two blocked shots. Freshman Jess Selby came off the bench to record a career-high nine points on a trio of triples in her 14 minutes of work.

The Spartans finished the game shooting just 24.1% from the floor including 25% (5-of-20) from three. York was good from the free throw line as they made 14-of-18 in the loss. Mary Washington wasn't much better than York shooting the ball as they converted 36.5% from the field including 1-of-11 (9.1%) from three. The Eagles were a sharp 15-for-17 (88.2%) from the free throw line in the contest.

The Spartans were outrebounded 46-34 in the game, which led to Mary Washington holding a 24-14 edge in points in the paint and a 13-8 margin in second chance points.

The Green and White continues to struggle to score in their four game losing streak as the Spartans are averaging just 45.7 points per game in their last four games. The difference between the Spartans winning and losing is dramatic. In victory, the Spartans are averaging 66.8 points per game while they have mustered just a 49.8 points per game average in their seven losses.

The Spartans return to action on Wednesday evening when they host Hood in a Capital Athletic Conference contest. Game time at Wolf Gymnasium is set for 6:00 pm.
