LEXINGTON, Va. – Washington and Lee shot a blistering 53% from the field and jumped out to a 17point first half lead as the Eagles fell by an 87-67 tally to the defending ODAC Champion Generals at the Warner Center in Lexington, Va.
Washington and Lee opened the game on a 6-0 run as the Eagles were ice cold from the field, shooting 0-for-5 in the process over the first nearly four minutes of the game.
Bridgewater answered with an 11-2 run over the next two minutes to take an 11-8 lead with just under 15 minutes to play in the first half.
After the two teams traded scores, Washington and Lee used a 19-2 run over the next five minutes to establish a 32-15 lead with eight and a half minutes to play in the opening stanza.
The Generals advantage remained in double figures for the majority of the final eight minutes of the opening frame, before Washington and Lee took a 45-32 lead into the locker room.
Out of the intermission, the Eagles started the second half on fire cutting the Generals lead to two at a 52-50 tally with 12:15 to play in the game.
Washington and Lee responded to the Eagles' 18-7 run with a 6-0 spurt to push the lead back to eight points with 10:28 to play in the game.
Sophomore Katelynn Hottinger netted a layup to cut the lead to six points before the Eagles went on a four-plus minute scoreless drought from the field, allowing Washington and Lee to establish a double-digit lead at a 68-55 tally with 6:15 remaining in the game.
The lead for Washington and Lee remained in double figures for the duration of the game as the Eagles fell for the second time on the week, this time by an 87-67 score.
Bridgewater was led offensively by an 19-point effort from sophomore Jessica Mullen. Mullen led a trio of Eagles in double-figures. Burkholder pitched in 17 in the loss, while Hottinger also tossed in 15 for the Eagles offense, which shot at a 37.7% clip from the field.
On the glass, a trio of Eagles led the way with four rebounds apiece as Bridgewater was outrebounded by a slim 34-to-30 margin.
Washington and Lee was led by a 17-point effort from Meg Ingram. Ingram led four Generals players in double-figures. The Generals knocked down a dozen treys in the win.
Becca Bolton came off of the bench to lead the Generals with nine rebounds.
Points off of turnover and bench points also leaned heavily in favor of the Generals. While both teams turned the ball over 18 times, Washington and Lee converted 18 Eagles miscues into 33-12 advantage in points off of turnovers. Washington and Lee's bench outscored Bridgewater by a 30-8 tally.
Bridgewater is back in action on Friday, January 14 when the Eagles travel to the Tarheel State to take on Guilford College. Action from Guilford is slated for a 7:00 p.m. start.
