BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Carrie Bunnell (Barnet, Vt.), junior Kelley Paradis (Newport, Maine) and sophomore Beth Suggs (Bath, Maine) combined to score 51 points, leading the University of New England to an 80-61 non-conference women's basketball win over Husson University on Thursday evening at the Campus Center.
The win improves the Nor'easters' record to 7-5 in their final non-conference tilt of the season. The Eagles drop their fifth straight contest to fall to 2-8. The victory was UNE's fourth consecutive over Husson.
Suggs was 7-for-11 from the floor en route to a career-best 18 points. She also grabbed eight rebounds. Paradis scored 17 points -- including five field goals from beyond the arc -- while adding four assists, four steals and a pair of blocked shots. Bunnell tallied 16 points to go with six boards and five assists to match a career high.
Senior Noelle Lincoln (Dixmont, Maine) connected for four treys in scoring 12 points to lead the way for Husson. Junior Brianna Hanscom (Mattawamkeag, Maine) contributed 11 points and four steals.
The Nor'easters started the game quickly, racing out to an 8-0 lead 1:54 into the contest. Husson responded with 10 consecutive points to grab its only lead of the evening.
Down 10-8, Big Blue put together a 28-9 surge thru the middle portion of the frame to establish a 36-19 advantage. Suggs, Bunnell and senior Chelsey Meszaros (North Clarendon, Vt.) accounted for 23 of the 28 points during the barrage.
UNE went on to lead 53-30 at intermission, thanks in large part to sizzling shooting from the floor (66.7 percent) and a 20-11 margin on the glass.
The Eagles would get no closer than 19 the rest of the way, with the Nor'easters taking their largest lead (63-32) on a free throw by Bunnell with 15:14 on the clock.
For the game, UNE made half (28 of 56) of its field goal attempts while outrebounding the visitors, 41-25. Big Blue racked up 30 points in the paint and the same number from its bench.
The Nor'easters open their conference schedule Saturday when New England College comes to Biddeford for a 1 p.m. game.
Husson is idle until Jan. 11 when it hosts Colby College for a 7 p.m. tip.
