SPARTAN WOMEN USE SECOND HALF SURGE TO DEFEAT HIRAM IN NON-CONFERENCE FINALE

CLEVELAND, OH – Junior forward Erin Hollinger (Chardon, OH/Chardon) scored a game-high 20 points and the Case Western Reserve University women's basketball team outscored Hiram College by 16 in the second half en route to a 60-44 victory in the Spartans' non-conference finale on Tuesday, January 4 at Horsburgh Gymnasium.

With the win, the Spartans improve to 6-5 heading into their University Athletic Association opener at Carnegie Mellon University (PA) on Saturday, January 8 at 3:00 p.m. Hiram has its four-game win streak snapped and falls to 8-4 overall.

In addition to Hollinger (pictured right), senior forward Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA/Robinson) recorded 16 points and six rebounds, while sophomore guard Evy Iacono (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) totaled 12 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

Hiram was led by Jessica Cowan with 12 points.

The Spartans held the Terriers scoreless for the first 4:36 and built a 9-2 lead when Hollinger hit a jumper at the 15:14 mark. Hiram came back with a 16-4 run of their own and led 18-13 when Emily Smerchansky hit a free throw at 8:25. Case answered with six straight from Hollinger on a pair of three-point plays and led 19-18 with 7:40 remaining in the half, but Hiram was able to quickly regain the lead with a 6-0 run and led 24-19 when Cowan scored a layup at 5:06.

After that, both sides went cold on offense and Case was able to chip away and tie the score at 24 on a Henry (pictured left) three-pointer with 1:30 left before intermission.

Hiram got the first two points of the second half before the Spartans started a 17-3 run, ending in an Iacono three-pointer that made the score 43-29 with 13:09 left to play. Case's lead grew to a high of 24, at 58-34, when Henry hit a pair of free throws at 6:59.

Following Saturday's UAA opener in Pittsburgh, the Spartans are back home to host their first UAA weekend of the season. Case hosts New York University on Friday, January 14 at 6:00 p.m. and Brandeis University (MA) on Sunday, January 16 at 2:00 p.m.
