MARIETTA, Ohio -- Mount Union's nationally-ranked women's basketball team was tripped up on Wednesday, dropping a 73-69 decision at Ohio Athletic Conference foe Marietta.
The Pioneers (6-6, 2-3) were led by Aleisha Guiler's mammoth effort as she finished with 33 points and 11 rebounds.
The Purple Raiders trailed by as many as 15 points before forging a late tie, however, Guiler scored the game's final four points for the hosts.
Kori Wiedt (North Olmsted/North Olmsted) and Katie Crider (Brunswick/Brunswick) scored 18 and 12 points, respectively, for Mount Union (10-2, 4-2).
With 5:41 left in the first half, Marietta's Mallory Hoff snapped a 24-all knot with a layup and free throw. The Pioneers outscored Mount Union, 19-9, for the rest of the period. Hoff had eight points during the charge, including a buzzer-beating 3-pointer which gave the home team a 43-33 halftime advantage.
A second-half trey by Rachel Jones increased Marietta's lead to 48-33 before the Raiders began to chip away.
Brittany Kilgore (Northfield/Nordonia) scored five points and Marybeth Leitch (Rocky River/Rocky River) had four during a 9-point Mount Union run, which closed the gap to 48-42.
Trailing 69-61, the Raiders had one final gasp. Rosa LaMattina (Westlake/Westlake) made a layup, Wiedt hit a 3-pointer and Crider tied the game at 69-all with a three of her own.
At that point, Guiler took matters into her own hands. She made the go-ahead jumper with 43 seconds left and followed it with a steal and two free throws.
Hoff finished with 18 points and nine rebounds while Tori Dixon made nine assists for the Pioneers, who shot 53.7 percent from the field (29 of 54).
The Purple Raiders, who are ranked 11th by ESPN/USA Today and 13th by D3Hoops.com, will return to action on Saturday when they host OAC opponent Ohio Northern for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
