Guiler's 33 boosts Pioneers to 73-69 upset of No. 13 Purple Raiders

MARIETTA. Ohio — Sophomore post Aleisha Guiler (Lower Salem/Monroe Central) scored a career-high 33 points in Marietta College's 73-69 upset victory over #11 University of Mount Union Wednesday (Jan. 5) evening in Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) women's basketball action at Ban Johnson Arena. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak against the Purple Raiders and improved Pioneers' record to 6-6 overall and 2-3 in the league. Mount Union, ranked #11 by USA Today/ESPN and #13 by D3Hoops.com, fell to 10-2 overall and 4-2 in the OAC.

Guiler also posted a game-high 11 rebounds in the win. Senior post Mallory Hoff (Newport/Frontier) added a season-best 18 points to go along with nine rebounds and game-high four blocks. Freshman guard Tori Dixon (Londonderry/Vinton County) also chipped in with five points and a career-high nine assists, while junior wing Rachel Jones (Dublin/Coffman) had eight points ad five boards in the win.

Kori Wiedt led the way for the Purple Raiders with 18 points on the night. Katie Crider was the only other Mount Union player to score in double figures. She finished with 12 off the bench.

Both teams traded baskets on each other throughout the first 13:55 of the first half to make the scored tied 24-24. The Pioneers then closed the half on a 19-9 run, which included a desperation three from Hoff at the buzzer, and into the locker room leading by 10 points, 43-33.

A lay up from Hoff and a Jones three-pointer pushed the lead to 15 points, 48-33, with 18:54 to play in regulation. The Raiders then started to slowly chip away at the Pioneers' lead. Mount Union cut the lead down inside five points on three separate occasions, but Marietta responded to push the lead back above five points each time.

A three by Wiedt with 2:37 to play trimmed the lead to three points, 69-66. The Pioneers could not capitalize on their next possession and then saw a three from Crider go in to tie the game at 69 with 1:15 to play. After fourth-year Head Coach Jill Meiring called a timeout, the Pioneers went back to Guiler. The sophomore post delved a clutch turn-around jumper in the paint with 43 seconds on the clock to put Marietta up two points, 71-69. Marietta then forced a Purple Raider turnover on the next possession and the Raiders were forced to foul. Guiler calmly walked to the charity stripe and nailed two free throws to push the advantage to four points, 73-69. Mount Union could not connect on its last two frantic shots and Marietta pulled off the 73-69 upset win.

Marietta finished the game shooting 53.7% (29-of-54) from the field, 29.4% (5-of-17) from three and 90.9% (10-of-11) from the free throw line. The Pioneers also held a 30-18 advantage in points in the paint. The Purple Raiders finished the night shooting 32.8% (20-of-61) from the field, 44.0% (11-of-25) from three and 85.7% (18-of-21) from the free throw line. Marietta out rebounded Mount Union 38-31 but committed 19 turnovers to Mount Union's 12.

The Pioneers will look to build off the upset on Saturday (Jan. 8) afternoon when they visit Heidelberg University for an OAC tip-off at 2 p.m.
