Muskies drop Lions, snap five-game skid

Junior guard Erin Cepa had a game-high 17 points in the Muskies 56-53 victory over Finalnaida University Monday night.

The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Muskies. The game was a tale of two halves though as the Muskies played stellar in the first-half shooting 40 percent (13-32) from the field, including 44 percent from the three-point arc. Cepa led Lakeland with 15 first half points and three rebounds. Sophomore Dana Henrichs added five points and junior Allison Davis added four points and three rebounds as the Muskies led 37-31 at half.

In the second-half Lakeland went cold, shooting just 16 percent (6-37) from the field and missing all seven three-point attempts. Henrichs led the Muskies with seven second-half points, which included going 5-8 from the free throw line. The difference in the game was on the glass as Lakeland out-rebounded the Lions 38-22 in the game. The Muskies were able to get second chance opportunities and get to the foul line.

Overall, Lakeland's poor offensive numbers continued as they shot just 28 percent (19-69) from the field, 25 percent (4-16) from the three-point arc, and just 64 percent (14-22) from the free throw line. Meanwhile, the Lions shot 42 percent (19-45) from the field, 41 percent (7-17) from the three-point arc, and 80 percent (8-10) from the charity stripe.

Henrichs finished the game with 12 points. Davis and junior Becca Paulson each had a game-high seven rebounds while Henrichs and Cepa both finished with six.

Lakeland resumes play Tuesday, January 4, as they travel to Ashland, Wis. to face Northland College. Tip-off is 5:30 p.m.
