FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- Alverno College defeated host Marian University tonight at Sadoff Gymnasium for a 73-62 Northern Athletics Conference victory. The Inferno's bench outscored their counterparts 37-8 and proved to be instrumental in the team's second straight win.

"I was happy with our production from the bench," Alverno head coach Brad Duckworth said. "We've been able to go 10, 11, 12 deep and our depth proved valuable again tonight."

With the game tied 49-49 with just over 10 minutes to play, Alverno (4-6, 3-3 NAC) used a 12-0 run over the next 4 minutes to take control of the game and secure the victory. During that span the Inferno defense forced the Sabres into three turnovers and 0-for-6 shooting from the field, including 0-for-5 from beyond the 3-point arc.

The Sabres (5-5, 3-5 NAC), who lead the conference with 9.0 3-pointers made per game, where held to a season-low as they connected on only five (of 21 attempts) from beyond the arc.

Alverno had its best night of the season from the 3-point arc as it nailed 60 percent of its attempts (9-of-15), tying the single-game school record with the nine treys.

Both teams shot 44 percent from the floor, but the Inferno took advantage from the free-throw line as they shot 77 percent (20-of-26) from the charity stripe while Marian was only 61 percent accurate (11-of-18).

Shataya McComb (Kingston, N.Y.) led Alverno with 18 points and seven rebounds as she shot 6-of-8 from the floor including a perfect 2-of-2 from the 3-point arc.

Alicia Kontowski (South Milwaukee, Wis.) came off the bench to score 13 points and also snagged seven rebounds, scoring double-figures for the eighth straight game.

Kaitlin Schaeren (New Berlin, Wis./West) also added nine points off the bench on 4-of-7 shooting.

"After a 3 week layoff, to come out and put 73 on the board shows how talented we are offensively. The players are starting to figure out a formula that wins, and it's fun to see us have multiple pieces to that puzzle gets us wins."

Alverno travels to Appleton, Wis., to play host Lawrence University on Monday in a nonconference game. The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff in Alexander Gymnasium.
