DAYTONA BEACH, FLA – The York College women's basketball team suffered their third straight setback as the Spartans dropped a 70-47 decision to Bethel College (Minnesota) on Thursday morning in the Land of Magic Classic in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Royals improve to 3-4 as they won both of their games at the Classic while the Spartans fall to 6-6 after their 6-3 start.
Freshman Kristen Haley led the Spartan offense with 13 points but she didn't get much help as no other Spartan had more than six points as the Green and White suffered their second straight lopsided loss.
The Spartans got off to an early lead before the Royals hit the Spartans with an 11-2 run to take a 24-15 lead with 9:46 left in the half. Bethel eventually built the lead to 15 before settling for the 35-22 halftime advantage.
The Royals used the first five minutes of the second half to build their advantage to 22 at 47-25. York would not be able to get any closer than 20 points the rest of the way. The Royals had a game-high lead of 31 points before the Spartans drew to within 23 at the final horn.
Shana Grejtak led all scorers with 24 points, as she was 8-for-8 from the floor and 8-for-9 from the free throw line. She also had five rebounds, five steals, two assists and a blocked shot. Scottie Moats was the other Royal in double figures with 13 points while she pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
Haley was 6-for-9 from the floor including 1-for-1 from three while she also had a blocked shot and a steal. Freshman Jess Selby was the next high scorer for York as she had six points in her 10 minutes of action. Senior Jaimie Sapp led York on the glass with five caroms while she also had three points.
The Royals dominated every aspect of the game as they shot 52% from the floor, 33% (4-for-12) from three and 87.5% (14-for-16) from the charity stripe. York shot just 40.4% from the field, 25% (3-of-12) from three and 50% (6-for-12) from the free throw line.
Bethel outrebounded York 32-26 while they forced 20 Spartan turnovers.
The Spartans are now off until January 8 when they step back into conference play against Mary Washington. Game time from Charles Wolf Gymnasium is set for 4:00 pm.
