Oswego State Suffers 56-48 Setback To Salve Regina

The Oswego State women's basketball team was unable to overcome a nine-point halftime deficit as it fell to Salve Regina, 56-48, at the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout on Tuesday night.  Kayla Ryan led all scorers with 18 points, but no other Laker reached double-digits as Oswego State dropped to 5-2 overall.  Salve Regina improved to 7-2 overall.  The Lakers will look to get back into the win column tomorrow night when it faces Westminster (Pa.) at 6 p.m.

Both squads engaged in a back-and-forth battle throughout much of the first half with Oswego State holding a slim 15-13 advantage with 8:31 remaining after a Meagan Stover lay-up.  However, it would be the last Laker lead of the game as Salve Regina scored ten unanswered points from four different players to take an eight-point lead at 23-15 with 5:22 to play in the stanza.  Oswego State went into the intermission trailing 31-22 after shooting 28.7 percent from the field (8-of-29).

After Salve Regina opened the second half with a three-pointer, the Lakers responded with a 7-0 run courtesy of a trey by Kristen Diglio and four free throws by Ryan to make the score 34-29.  Oswego State hung with the opposition, but was unable to chip into the deficit as Salve Regina built its' biggest lead of the game at 15 points with 6:14 on the clock.  The Lakers registered the next seven points, but it was not enough as Salve Regina posted the victory.

Neither squad shot well from the floor as Oswego State shot 30.0 percent and Salve Regina shot 32.2 percent.

In addition to her 18 points, Ryan also contributed seven rebounds, two blocks, and two steals.  Traci Bacon was the next top scorer for the Lakers with nine points to go along with five assists.  Salve Regina was paced by Kimberly Horan's 15 points off the bench followed by 11 points apiece from Lisa Bucci and Marissa Pendergast.
